Abbreviations

Ch = chain

St(s) = stitch(es)

Sc = single crochet

Ssc = spike single crochet

Rs = right side

Notes

This cowl will be worked sideways then seamed at the end.

Every even row is worked s row 2 and adds 1 st to the total count.

Special Stitches

Spike Single Crochet (Ssc): Insert your hook into the stitch 2 rows below, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through all loops on hook.

Stripe Pattern: *Work 2 rows of color A, then 2 rows of color B; repeat from *
To change color work to the last step of the last stitch in the current color, pull up a loop with the new color to complete the stitch. Carry your yarn up the side of the cowl (do not fasten off to change color). Don’t worry about this looking too tidy as it will be covered with trim sts at the end.

Instructions

With Color A ch 52.

*Remember to follow the stripe pattern

Row 1 (rs): Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and every ch across. (51)

Place a st marker on st #2 of row 1, move the st marker up to the corresponding st after you complete each row.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st st, skip the next st, sc in each st until 1 st remains before the marked st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the marked st, 2 sc in the last st. (52)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (52)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st st, skip the next st, sc in each st until 1 st remains before the marked st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the marked st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the last. (53)

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st 3 sts, *Ssc in the next, sc in the next 3; repeat from * across until 2 sts remain, Ssc in the next, sc in the last. (53)

Row 6 (every even row from now on): Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st st, skip the next st, sc in each st until 1 st remains before the marked st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the marked st, 2 sc in the next , sc in each remaining st. (54)

Row 7: Repeat row 3. (54)

Row 8: Repeat row 6. (55)

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st, *Ssc in the next, sc in the next 3; repeat from * until 2 sts remain, Ssc in the next, sc in the last. (55)
