Size 

Approx. 60” wide by 14” tall at the tallest point.

 

Yarn

4 skeins of Furls Whims Merino DK weight.

 

Hook

G+/4.5mm Furls streamline hook (or hook to obtain gauge)

H/5mm Furls streamline hook

 

Notes

This shawl is made in one piece starting with the body which is worked sideways. The trim is then added to the bottom.

 

Gauge

22 sts by 12 rows = 4’ square (blocked)

 

Gauge is worked alternating rows of sc and dc worked in the FLO

 

Abbreviations

ch = chain

st(s) = stitch(es)

sc = single crochet

Dc – double crochet

sc2tog = single crochet two together

Dc2tog = double crochet two together

FLO = front loop only

Ws – wrong side

 

Gleason Shawl Free Crochet Pattern Instructions

Increasing Rows

With smaller hook Ch 2.

Row 1 (ws): 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (2)

Row 2: Ch 2, working in the FLO, 2 dc in the 1st st, dc in the last. (3)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2 sc in the last st. (4)

Row 4: Ch 2, turn, working in the FLO, 2 dc in the 1st st, dc in each remaining st. (5)

 

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 62 total rows. You will have 63 sts.

 

Straight Rows

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO, sc in each st across.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, working in the FLO, dc in each st across.

 

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 62 rows for the straight section (124 rows total)

 

Decreasing rows

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (62)

Row 2: Ch 1, working in the FLO, dc2tog, dc in each remaining st. (61)

 

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 62 rows for the increasing section (186 rows total)

Gleason Shawl Free Crochet Pattern

Trim

You will now start working in the ends of the rows along the decreasing and increasing side of the shawl.

 

Row 1: With larger hook, ch 1, evenly sc down the side of the shawl (1 sc per sc row and 2 sc per dc row). (280)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO, sc2tog, *dc in the next, sc in the next; repeat from * until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (278)

 

Repeat row 2, 9 more times.

 

Fasten off, weave in ends.
