I like using crochet bags as reusable market bags but sometimes I like something a little more sturdy. Something I can carry around as a purse because certain family members are always giving me their stuff to carry. There’s one problem….it means I need to add a lining but I HATE sewing. Which is funny because my mom was a seamstress. The good news is I use a cheat. Wanna know my secret?
Cotton canvas bags! You can find them cheap, sometimes they have cute patterns which makes for a nice surprise inside, you have an pre-made handle that wont stretch out and it means NO sewing!! Yay! For this project I used these cotton canvas bags from Amazon but you can use anything similar in size. And if you don’t want a lining you can find purse handles instead. To take it even further I didn’t even sew my lining in. I simply glued it in with some strong fabric glue. I use this bag for our big trip to Honduras to finish up our adoption. I carried around projects I brought to work on and it held up great!
Now about the yarn. I used Wool of the Andes from We Crochet. For bags I like to go with sturdy, affordable yarns. Crochet bags are great for using up those yarns that you might not necessarily wear against you skin. Sturdy cotton is also a good choice something like Dishie from We Crochet.

Notes
This bag is worked in one piece in the round. For the sample I used a canvas tote bag as a lining. You can find the bag I used from Amazon HERE.
You can also make your own lining or use other purse straps if you’d like.
Gauge (not critical for this project)
12 fk hdc by 6 rows = 4” square (blocked)
Special Stitches
Forked Half Double Crochet (fk hdc): Yo, insert hook into the first st indicated, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook into next st indicated, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 3 loops on hook, yo, pull through 3 remaining loops on hook.

Ch 41
Round 1: 3 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch until 1 remains, 3 hdc in the last ch, continue working on the opposite side of the ch, hdc in each ch, join with a slip st to the first hdc. (82)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in the first 3 sts, hdc in the next 38 sts, 2 hdc in the next 3 sts, hdc in each remaining hdc, join with a slip st to the first st. (88)
Round 3: Ch 2, fk hdc in the 1st 2 sts, *fk hdc in the same st as the previous fk hdc and the next st; repeat from * across, join with a slip st to the 1st fk hdc.
Note: the last fk hdc will be worked in the last st and the first st of the previous round.
Round 4-6: Repeat round 3.
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a slip st to the 1st st.
Rounds 8-32: Repeat rounds 3-7.
Round 33: Repeat round 7.
Fasten off.
Finishing
Attach purse handles or sew in tote bag as lining.
If using a bag as a lining, turn the inside out and hand sew it in at the top of the bag. Or use fabric glue like I did.
