Sizes (Approx. head circumference/ finished hat circumference):

One Size (20”-22”/20”)

  • Circumference is measured at the bottom of the hat.

Notes

  • Read all instructions before beginning.

  • This hat is worked in the rounds from the bottom up. You will sew up the top to finish.

  • The ch 1/ch 2 at the beginning of each round will NOT count as a st.

  • Be sure to pay careful attention to the turns.

  • You will join each round with a ss to the top of the first st of each round.

  • For stitch counts 1 shell = [1 sc, ch 2, 3(2 or 1) dcs]

  • When the instructions say to work into the side of the sc, insert your hook into the left (right if you’re a lefty) side 2 bars of the sc. I have provided a video of this below

Squid Dance Hat Free Crochet Pattern Instructions

Round 1 (RS)Fsc 66, being careful not to twist, join with a ss to the first st.

*size adjustment note: You can make this hat larger or smaller by working a fsc in multiples of 3. By this point the first round should comfortably fit around your head. A bit on the sung side is better than too loose as it will loosen up with wear.

Round 2-5 – Ch 1, working in the BLO c in every ch around, join. 66

Round 6Ch 1, working in the BLO sc in 1st, ch 2, 3 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip 2, *sc in the next, ch 2, 3 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip 2; repeat from * around, join to the beg ch 1. 22 shells

Round 7Ss in the ch-2 space, ch 1, turn, sc in the same ch-2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip the next 3 dc, * sc in the next ch-2 space, ch 2, 3 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip the next 3 dc; repeat from * around, join to the beg ch 1. 22 shells

Repeat round 7,  7 more times.

*Size adjustment note: you can repeat round 7 more or less time to make the hat larger or smaller

Round 15Ss in the ch-2 space, ch 1, turn, sc in the same ch-2 space, ch 2, 2 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip the next 3 dc, * sc in the next ch-2 space, ch 2, 2 dc in the side of the last sc worked, skip the next 3 dc; repeat from * around, join to the beg ch 1. 22 shells

I can’t wait to try this pattern. How much of a second skein gets used in the larger size? I have a Blue SKy Alpaca yarn I’d love to use for this, but only one, and its a smaller skien (100yds), so I’m wondering if I need one or two more. Thanks!

  • Kathy

Hi there! I started on this pattern and I’ve hit a snag. I’m pretty new at crocheting anything other than afghans so I thought I’d try a hat! Can you help me with round 5…”…sc in 1st, 3 dc in the side of the last sc worked”? I don’t understand 1. where I put my hook in, and 2. if I go into the that 1st sc that I just made. Any help would be glorious! 🙂

HELP!!! I just finished making this lovely hat and I added a few rows to make it extra slouchy (as per request!). I’ve never made a hat from the bottom up…..how do I sew up the top? If I sew it straight across, I won’t get the pretty, gathered look like you did. 40 years of crocheting and this has stumped me!

      Hi Trudy,
I just sew all the way around the top of the stitches of the last round and then gather up the top tight (maybe go through the stitches one more time to close it up tight). That’s really it 🙂

Hi, first Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful pattern! I am having trouble on the repeat row 6, it looks like when I turn in going the wrong way or that there isn’t as big of gaps /spaces as there is between my first and second row. Thanks!

      • Danielle Manriquez

When I do my turn on the first repeat (row 7) it seems like the row below is overlapping under and from the pictures it lays flat not puffy, so I’m not sure what I’m doing incorrectly, thank you for your speedy response and sorry for the unclear way I worded it!

        • ktandthesquid

Hmm…Not sure you’re doing anything wrong. It could be because the rows below are tighter so it might pull the first few rounds in. Plus, my hat is on a model’s head so it’s stretched out a bit…If you want you can send a picture to my email Ktandthesquid(at)aol(dot)com

    Hi Katy!
Thank you for sharing this pattern! I started on it and I have a question – I’ve made about 7 shells on row 2 and the row is starting to curl. Before I go any further, I wanted to make sure that’s correct and they will flatten out as I continue more rows. Thanks so much!

Katy – I think I figured it out! I took out the row and started over. I believe I was not counting correctly. But now I have another question. When you say to go into the side of the sc stitch, it seems to me that you are just going into the space that forms after you chain 2 on top of the sc. Isn’t it the same place you go in whether you go into the right side or the left side? That’s where I’ve been going into – please tell me if that’s not correct. I hope that made sense! Thanks, Katy!

I go into the two loops on the left hand side but I’m right handed. If you are a lefty it will be on the other side (because you’re working in the opposite direction).

Hi. How much does yarn choice matter with this pattern. I wanted to make this for a cancer patient who has list all her hair. I have ‘i love this yarn’ which is a softer not so itchy yarn. Will it work?

  • Meredith

I have a super bulky yarn that I would love to make this hat with. Any suggestions on how to alter the pattern or just trial and error?

    • ktandthesquid

It should work just as long as your starting foundation is a multiple of 3. So I’d just make is large enough to snugly fit on your head. Then work until you like the length.

  • Mercedes

Contrats for your page! Love your tarde mark!
Sorry for being repetitive with this question… I really don’t understand the difference between the sc space where we always insert de hook and the left side of the sc… For me is the same… Are you using USA instructions, right? Please please if you can post a photo with an arrow pointing where is the common space and where is the lef (or right if lefty) side of the sc.
    Thank you so much!

    • ktandthesquid

      Hi Mercedes,
It’s in US terms but there’s really no term for the side of a stitch other than saying the side of the stitch.
Have you ever worked a border on a a blanket? It’s the same place you’d place your stitch in that instance. It really is just the side of the stitch (not the top). Sorry, I don’t really know any other way to say it.
      Thanks!
