Yarn

3 skeins of worsted weight yarn about 200 yards each.

The sample is shown in Plymouth Yarn Worsted Merino Superwash

I/5.5mm hook (or hook to obtain gauge)

1 Stitch marker (scrap yarn works great!)

This cowl will be worked sideways then seamed at the end.

Every even row adds 1 st to the total count.

Gauge 

15 sc by 20 rows = 4” square blocked

Ch = chain

St(s) = stitch(es)

Sc = single crochet

Ssc = spike single crochet

Special Stitches

Spike Single Crochet (Ssc): Insert your hook into the stitch 2 rows below, pull up a loop, yarn over pull through all loops on hook.

Stripe Pattern: Work *(2 rows of color A, 2 rows of color B) 4 times, ( 2 rows color C, 2 rows color B) 3 times, (2 rows color C, 2 rows color A) 3 times, 2 rows color C; repeat from *
To change color work to the last step of the last stitch in the current color, pull up a loop with the new color to complete the stitch. Carry your yarn up the side of the cowl (do not fasten off to change color). Don’t worry about this looking too tidy as it will be covered with trim sts at the end.

Row 1 (ws): Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and every ch across. (31)

Place a st marker on st #2 of row 1, move the st marker up to the corresponding st after you complete each row (the st between the increases of every even row).

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the 1st st, skip the next st, sc in each st until 1 st remains before the marked st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the marked st, 2 sc in the last st. (32)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (32)

Bottom Trim

Pick up color A, ch 1, evenly sc down the side of the cowl working 5 sc for every 6 rows.

Do not fasten off.

Seam
With the wrong side facing out slip st the first 31 sts of the last row (start 1 st after the st marker) to the 31 chains of the foundation chain. 

Do not fasten off.

Top Trim

Ch1, evenly sc around the top of the cowl, join with a slip st to the 1st st.

Fasten off, block as desired, weave in ends.
