Halsey Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

The Halsey Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern is made from the top down without seams in a simple stitch that gives a lovely texture. Available in sizes XS-5X it’s super versatile. This cardigan uses only single crochet and double crochet so its pretty beginner friendly. The best part is it’s also completely seamless!

Size 

xs (s, m, l, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x)

To fit a bust of: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 52, 56, 60, 64)”

Finished bust: 36 (40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 66)”

Arm opening depth: 6.4 (6.4, 7.2, 7.2, 8, 8.8, 8.8, 9.6, 10.4)”

Length underarm to hem: 22”

Length of sleeve: 18”

Finished cardigan should have 4-6” positive ease. Shown on a model with a 32” bust in size xs.

Yarn

11 (12, 14, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21) skeins We Crochet Kindred (68% Baby Alpaca, 32% Peruvian Pima Cotton; 115  yds/100  g; dk weight)

H/5 mm hook (or hook to obtain gauge)

Abbreviations

Ch = chain

St = stitch

Sc = single crochet

Dc = double crochet

FLO – Front loop only

BLO = back loop only

Notes
This cardigan is worked in one piece without seams from the top down. The foundation ch will rest on the shoulders when done.

Gauge 

17 st by 10 rows in pattern = 4” square (blocked)

Ch an odd number

Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook, dc in the next, *sc in the next, dc in the next; repeat from across.

Row 2: ch 1, turn, working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across.

Repeat row 2 to desired length

Back

Foundation ch: Ch 77 ( 85, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129, 137, 141)

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, dc in the next, *sc in the next, dc in the next; repeat from * across. 

Row 2: Ch 1, turn,  working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across. 76 (84, 96, 104, 112, 120, 128, 136, 140)
Rows 3-16 (16, 18, 18, 20, 22, 22, 24, 26): Repeat row 2.

Fasten off

Front Side 1
Join to the back side of the first ch of the Foundation ch.

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc for 38 (42, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 70) total sts (half of the back). 

Rows 2-16 (16, 18, 18, 20, 22, 22, 24, 26): Repeat row 2 of the back.

Fasten off

Front Side 2
Join to the next ch of the Foundation ch.

Repeat as you did for the Front Side 1

Do NOT fasten off.

Body
Row 1: Ch 1 turn,  working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across the Front Side 2,  working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across the Back,  working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across across the Front Side 1. 152 (168, 188, 208, 220, 236, 256, 272, 284)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn,  working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc across.

Rows 3-45: Repeat row 2.

If you’d like to make the cardigan longer or shorter you can repeat row 2 to desired length minus 4”

Bottom Trim
Ch 18.
Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, slip st in the next 2 sts of the last row of the bottom. 17 sc
Row 2: Turn, skip the 2 slip sts, working in the BLO sc in each st across. 17 sc
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, working in the BLO sc in each st across, slip st in the next 2 sts of the last row of the bottom. 17 sc

Repeat rows 2 and 3 across the bottom of the cardigan ending on a repeat of row 2.

Front Finishing Row (rs): Ch 1, evenly sc (about 3 sc per 4 rows) up 1 side of the front and down the 2nd side. 

Fasten off.

Halsey Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

Sleeves (repeat on both sides)
With right side facing out, join to the bottom of the under arm.

Round 1: Ch 1,  working around the opening of the arm alternate sc and dc for a total of  50 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84) sts with half of the sts before the foundation ch and half after, join with a slip st to the first st.
Round 2: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc around, join with a slip st to the first st.
Rounds 3-40: Repeat round 2 adding a decrease round (instructions below) for the following rounds. 

XS: Decrease for every 5th round
S and M: Decrease for every 4th round
L: Decrease for every 3rd round to round 36
1X: Decrease for every 3rd round to round 39
2X: Decrease for every 3rd round to round 30 then every even round to round 38
3X: Decrease for every 3rd round to round 18 then every even round to round 38
4X: Decrease for rounds 3 and 6 then every even round to round 38
5X: Decrease for round 4 then every round 

Decrease round: Ch 1, turn, skip 1 st, working in the FLO sc in each dc and dc in each sc until 1 st remains, skip 1 st, join with a slip st to the first st. 2 sts decreased

You will end with 34 (36, 40, 40, 42, 44, 44, 44, 46) sts

Sleeve Trim
Repeat as you did for the Bottom Trim. Slip st the last row to the first row (make sure your seam is on the wrong side).Finishing
Block, weave in ends
